Two thoughts about books today;
1. How do you chose a book?
When you walk into the book shop, the book shop in the centre of town is quite large, how do you chose a book? Picture it if you will, there they all are in their shiny new coats all excited that you have come to see them and they all want to go home with you too. So how do you chose?
- Pick a favourite author
- Pick a favourite genre
- Select the book of the month
- Buy one of your to read list
Buy several- Select at random
- Buy a book buy its cover
- Spend hours wandering around and around and then walk out alone
I think i do all of the above at some point or other. I think i like most is ‘Select at random’ or ‘Buy a book by its cover’. The one thing i never do when i am just wandering is read the blurbs on the book jacket, i really do like a surprise when i have chosen at random.
2. How do you score your books?
Anyone who is familiar with either amazon or ‘Goodreads’ will know that both sites have a start system but apparently both are slightly different to each other. Personally i have my own and it goes like this -
1* = rubbish
2* = tried it but didn’t get very far
3* = good, enjoyed it but wouldn’t read it again
4* = enjoyed it, will keep it and will probably read it again
5* = amazing, loved it, will read it again and want the world to read it to
- The Bone Setter’s Daughter
- Like Bees to Honey
- Jane Eyre
- Great Expectations
- The Mayor of Casterbridge
- Captain’s Corelli’s Mandolin (forget the film)
- The Night Circus
To name a few.
So if you happen across my ‘Goodreads’ site and you wander why i have given a certain rating, now you will know. So how do you rate yours?

I like another book with the word bees in the title, but it’s name escapes me… nevermind. You told me to read it a while ago and then they made it into a film, and I can remember the actresses name but not the book’s name – how funny.
Also to add to the 4* and possibly 5* list is anything by Mitch Albom
Like Bees to Honey is a film?? i didn’t know? Another bee one ?????
I Mitch may be a 4*
No no, not Like Bees to Honey, its another book you told me to read I shall go find the name of it now….
The Secret Life of Bees
That’s what it is called
yep
I like your explanation of the stars – that sounds about right! When I’m book shopping for fun (not looking for a particular book before I get to the store), I generally check out a couple of genres I like and also see what’s featured in the “New Books” section – if the cover or title look intriguing, or if it’s by a favorite author, I’ll pick it up and take a closer look. And maybe I’ll buy it, although at the moment I’m really trying to keep myself from picking up anything new
!
i have decided that until i run out of books i am only allowed to look and that may be a while
